December Fishing Report

The cool winds of December have finally arrived after an almost endless summer! With the change has come a wonderful array of fish to our area. Spanish mackerel are swarming our inshore reefs, while larger kingfish and sailfish migrate on their southerly routes. Mutton snappers and yellowtails are also turning on with the cooler waters.
The mackerel are biting everything from trolling lures to cast and retrieve jigs and plugs, and cut bait when they arrive in the chum line. Small live bait will drive them crazy at times, but getting these baits can be harder than catching the mackerel!
Kingfish are biting the usual ballyhoo or sardine on a three hook rig, with 1 to 4 ounces of lead in the front, or a jig of similar size. We are finding these in 80 to 180 feet of water.
The sailfish seem to show up strong with a front, especially when the North current rips come inshore to less than 200 feet of water. This creates a northerly swell (from the north) that the sailfish will surf down, making them easy to see, and get baits in front of. We fish flat line live baits, and also suspend live baits from a kite, on 20 to 30 lb test line.
The night fishing has been spectacular at times, with impressive catches of yellowtails, mixed in with mutton and mangrove snappers. Small bluefish, and an occasional kingfish rounds out the night action.
With the holiday season upon us, be sure to reserve your spots in advance, as we tend to get VERY busy. We will honor those on a first come, first serve basis.
Also remember that we specialize in group charters, everything from corporate events to bachelor parties! In addition to our larger boats that carry over 6 passengers on private events, we can provide everything from fancy sportfishing boats to hot, high speed outboard openfishermen. Call us at the office with your request, and we will quote your trip for you.
I promise, we do not disappoint!
Seasons Greetings, and Tight Lines!
